Firstly, I would like to thank you for preparing this list of proposed standard
names and units.
As you know, we at EUMETSAT are keen to develop CF satellite standard name and
unit conventions
for our netCDF data sets and for GSICS products so it would be interesting for
us to see how your proposal to a 'difficult' process develops
('difficult' as there are strong opinions to what units (& names) to use
although I think this is not a problem if unit conversion libraries
are available. Units can be easily converted from one to another to suit the
opinion of the user.).
I sent the proposal to my EUMETSAT colleagues and the following comments have
been compile from feedback received
(so don't shoot the messenger ;o)

For the following standard name, should the units be set to 1 since it does not
have Canonical units?

The unit of radiance is a difficult one to defined as the SI version is not
easy to work with.
The one defined in the proposal is the most usable for the users even though it
is not SI.
Units definition should take usability into consideration.

platform_zenith_angle & sensor_zenith_angle could be changed to be more generic
by:
:standard_name="platform_look_angle"
:standard_name="sensor_look_angle
This is because for side looking instruments without scanning mechanism (e.g.
scatterometers and SARs) this angle is also relevant and this field could be
used too, but it doesn't make sense in those cases to talk about 'scan'.
Instead, 'look' is more generic
The variable comment attribute could be added to provide more information if
needed.

Another observation was made for platform_zenith_angle & sensor_zenith_angle.
The platform_zenith_angle (units=degree) is already in the CF convention (this
was also observed by Mike Grant; cf-satellite Digest, Vol 25, Issue 4).
However, this is not the best name for the instruments' scan angle but
the CF convention also includes zenith_angle and angle_of_incidence.
It is suggested that this sufficient.
Do we need sensor_zenith_angle as this may be described by the
Angle-of-incidence ?

We would like to add the following to your proposal to the CF:
:standard_name="spectral_toa_irradiance"
:units="mW m-2 sr-1 (cm-1)-1"
Description -
TOA irradiance which is relevant for any sensor measuring in the UV-VIS and
NIR.
The standard convention is to have this parameter reported by integrating over
the whole sphere
which then makes the only change to TOA radiance that it is not sr-1.

:standard_name="atmosphere_reflectivity_ratio"
:unit="2*pi / (cos(SZA)) * I/I0"
Description -
Ratio of radiance to irradiance I/I0, reflection from a thick layer where the
layer, here the atmosphere, is part of the reflection's property.

Note, the standard names proposed at the end of the page are GSICS related that
have been work with & adopted by EUMETSAT and
the other GSICS partners. This should be made clear that a wider community have
agreed on these proposed names & units which
could help with their acceptance.

Dear CF-Satellite Community:
I am soliciting your comments about the 23 new standard names given here:
http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Standard_Names_For_Satellite_Observations
The names were developed by Ed Armstrong from JPL PO.DAAC and me
according to the official CF convention guidelines. The proposed
standard names are a mix of basic names applicable to Level 1 or 2
(SDR or EDR) data, and specific ones relevant to the satellite
instrument inter-calibration data.
I propose we adopt the two-week rule for comments. Not having comments
for two weeks indicates that we as a community have agreed on these
names. I will then submit them on the cf-metadata mailing list for
official acceptance.
