Dear CF-satellite community:
The US National Science Foundation’s EarthCube program is funding a
project<http://earthcube.org/group/advancing-netcdf-cf> titled “Advancing
netCDF-CF for the Geoscience Community” with the aim of preparing several
extensions to the current CF convention. One of the planned extensions is about
storing satellite swath data in the original instrument viewing geometry (often
times referred to as Level 1 and Level 2 data). This topic has been discussed
on the mailing list several times in the past and this time we intend to go all
the way and submit a proposal to the CF governing body. The proposal’s aim is
to support as many swath types as possible for data collected by any type of
instrument aboard satellites and aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles.
This message is a request for input. In order for the proposal to
comprehensively represent the current community practices in storing swath-like
data we are asking for examples of your netCDF files. The best is to send us
the output of a “ncdump -h” command or point us to sample files accessible via
the Internet. All received samples will be added to the
github.com/diwg/diwg<http://www.github.com/diwg/diwg> collection. In case of
HDF5 files, send us the output of a “h5dump -A” command.
The currently anticipated timeline is to prepare a draft proposal by the end of
2016 and invite community review. We will be posting important updates about
the progress.
Thank you!
