Hi,
after installing all the necessary stuff to run gribtonc, I believe that it
would be able
to run, ah yes, if I would be able to feed it with a correct .cdl file. We
have cmip data files
in t42 resolution ( 128x64 gridpoints) that is not a regular but a gaussian
grid. Is there
someone with experience in converting such files? Is it in general possible to
do so?
Thanks for help

Joerg,
I would start by inspecting all the current cdl files, find the one the
most matches your data. Then I would run gribtonc in verbose mode and
make the output come to the screen. This will show the variable names
that gribtonc is expecting. Using this information I would update
the cdl until no more messages. I know this is a trial and error method
but once one does this process a couple of runs it's works out fast. To
run gribtonc from the command line in verbose mode:
% gribtonc -vl - your.cdl your.nc < <rawdata file>
One can also look at the raw data with utility:
% gribdump <rawdata file>
