Subj: AFOS msg - # of watches approaches 1000
I sent the following message on AFOS, NWWS, and through the NWS
Telecommunications Gateway to the following users: Family of Services
(Public Products Service, Domestic Data Service, International Data Service),
Weather Message Switching Center (WMSC)/FAA, Honolulu, AWIPS and ISPAN text
lines, Canadian AES/Montreal, National Data Buoy Center. I also sent it via
cc:Mail to the 6 NWS Regional MSD Chiefs, and selected NWS program leaders.
NOTE (FYI): Just because I sent it to all these comms lines doesn't
NECESSARILY mean that all users who get data via these circuits data base
and/or read the message, but I did the best I could.
I sent this message under 3 different AFOS/WMO header identifiers, to ensure
the widest possible distribution. They are:
AFOS PIL WMO HEADER

WSHPNSNMC NOUS41 KWBC
WSHPNSFOS NOFS11 KWBC
LAST NOTE: Since it was late in the afternoon when I sent this out, I plan to
redistribute all 3 messages tomorrow afternoon, between 2 and 4 PM EST.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
515 PM EST THU NOV 18 1993
TO: ALL NWS OFFICES AND USERS OF TORNADO AND SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM WATCHES
FROM: JIM HENDERSON, DEPUTY DIRECTOR,
NATIONAL SEVERE STORMS FORECAST CENTER
SUBJECT: TORNADO AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER
APPROACHES 1000
The National Severe Storms Forecast Center (NSSFC) issued Tornado
Watch 951 yesterday. Internally within the National Weather
Service, we have had to make software changes in some of our
programs in anticipation that the NSSFC may issue over 1,000
watches before the year is out. Our programs have always been
set to accept 3 digit watch numbers, but this year we may get to
four digits. If you have a software program that utilizes the
many products pertaining to watches issued by NSSFC, you may want
to check that program to see if it will accept a four digit
number, and make any necessary adjustments.
For further, information, on this subject, you can check with
Frederick P. Ostby, Director of NSSFC at 816-426-5922.
