NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 94-51....CORRECTION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
230 PM EST FRI DEC 2 1994
TO: USERS OF GUIDANCE BASED ON NGM MOS WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION
FORECAST EQUATIONS FOR ALASKA AND CERTAIN STATIONS IN THE
CONUS
FROM: FRED ZBAR
ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH
SUBJECT: IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW NGM MOS WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION
FORECAST EQUATIONS FOR ALASKA AND CERTAIN STATIONS IN THE
CONUS
(THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY PAUL DALLAVALLE, CHIEF OF THE
SYNOPTIC-SCALE TECHNIQUE BRANCH OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT
LABORATORY)
Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on December 7, 1994, new NGM-based MOS
forecast
equations to predict the surface wind speed and direction at 3-h
intervals from
6 to 60 hours after both 0000 and 1200 UTC will be implemented for nearly
60 stations in Alaska. Guidance produced by these equations will be
transmitted
in the FOAK13 message available through the FAA's Weather Message Switching
Center and the NWS Family of Service's Domestic Data Service. At the same
time,
new equations will be implemented to add NGM-based wind guidance to the
FOUS14
message (FWC product on AFOS) for the following sites in the contiguous
United
States (CONUS):
ADM - Ardmore, OK BIH - Bishop, CA
BVE - Boothville, LA CDS - Childress, TX
CSM - Clinton, OK CVS - Cannon AFB, NM
DHT - Dalhart, TX DRT - Del Rio, TX
ENV - Wendover, UT INW - Winslow, AZ
LOL - Lovelock, NV MYL - McCall, ID
NSI - San Nicholas, Is., CA RBL - Red Bluff, CA
SEP - Stephenville, TX
A forthcoming Technical Procedures Bulletin (TPB) will describe the FOAK13
forecast message.
TPB No. 408 entitled "NGM-Based MOS Guidance - The FOUS14/FWC Message"
describes the
contents of the NGM MOS forecast message for stations in the CONUS and lists
the stations for
which guidance is transmitted. TPB No. 399 entitled "NGM-based MOS Wind
Guidance for the
Contiguous United States" describes the techniques used to develop the
NGM MOS
wind forecast
equations. Copies of these documents are available from:
