Dear nws-changes subscribers:
As you have noticed, there has been a deluge of messages on this
list in the past week. Some of you may be overwhelmed by this flurry
of announcements and activity at NWS, but the purpose of creating
the e-mail list was to provide adequate notice to Unidata sites in
preparation of the changes taking place on the FOS circuits and to keep
apprised of the NWS modernization activities. As the NWS modernization
continues, we can expect this flurry of messages to continure.
To that end, we would like to make you aware of alternative ways that
you can receive these messages or how you can stop getting them altogether.
1) If you feel that you do not need to receive these messages at all, you
can unsubscribe from the list by sending a message to
majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with no subject and the text of your
message:
unsubscribe nws-changes
end
Additional instructions on using majordomo are found at the bottom
of this message.
2) The NWS-changes announcements are archived in Unidata's WWW server. You
can access them through the Data Available through Unidata page:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/data.general.html
Click on "nws-changes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Email Archive" to search the
archive. The WAIS server will allow you to get all of the announcements
by date as we have been archiving chronologically. An example of a date
search would be:
9503*
(this will give you all of the announcements for March)
Alternatively, if you were looking for announcements pertaining to a
particular state (ex: Georgia), you could enter:
Georgia
in the search field for all messages relating to Georgia.
3) Messages sent out to nws-changes are also available on our ftp
server in one BIG file. Messages are appended to this file as they
are sent out. This file (nws-changes) is available by anonymous
ftp at ftp.unidata.ucar.edu in the pub/mail-archives directory.
4) If you are running an LDM server ingesting the DDS and PPS circuits,
you can have the LDM automatically forward these messages to you with
an action in your pqact.conf file. This will get you most of the messages
that are sent to the nws-changes list. An example of pattern actions to
receive the bulletins is:
####
# mail service bulletins
# admin messages, everything but ADMN09
WMO ^ADMN([0-9][0-8]|0[^9])
PIPE -strip -close /usr/ucb/mail -s ADMN lmiller
# family of services notices NOFS or NOUS, but not NOUS42
WMO ^NO.S([^4][0-9]|4[013-9])
PIPE -strip -close /usr/ucb/mail -s NOFS lmiller
These actions would sent the messages to the user lmiller. Please
note that there are some additional messages sent to nws-changes that
are not on the FOS circuits. These mostly pertain to the weather wire
circuits and deal with AFOS headers. Also note that several copies
of each of the bulletins identified in the pattern action are sent
on the circuits, so if you think you are getting overwhelmed by the
activity on the nws-changes list, then you will be floored by the
number of messages forwarded from the LDM.
5) If all else fails, there is always the delete key on your keyboard
when you see one of these messages appear in your mail program.
