NOAA/NESDIS plans to begin L2 back-up momentum wheel configuration taking
GOES-8 out of safe hold condition around 4:30 pm EST (2130 UTC) today.
Following the reconfiguration, GOES-8 imager and sounder GVAR data flow
should be restored sometime tonight between 9:00 pm and Midnight EST
(0200 - 0500 UTC, January 11).
Due to the lengthy outage, users should note that it may take up to 48
hours for full navigation and registration recovery. NESDIS will closely
monitor and evaluate GOES-8 data after it begins to flow, maintaining full
disk transmissions from GOES-9 until navigation and registration
performance has stabilized.
[NOAA Product Users Note: Both GOES-TAP and GINI/NOAAPort systems will
operate with contingency GOES-9 products covering the East until the GOES-8
data can be effectively used for NOAA operations. Users will be notified of
the switch to a normal two GOES operation.]
To facilitate navigation and registration recovery, a special schedule
will
be in effect for up to two days following the restoration of GOES-8 GVAR
data. Specifically, the schedule will adhere to the following
transmission
times and sectors:
Imaging
HH15 Extended Northern Hemisphere images
HH45 Abbreviated full disk images (19 minute transmission)
Exception is 0415, 0515, 1015, 1115, 1615, 1715, 2215 & 2315 UTC when an
abbreviated full disk image will be transmitted.
Sounding
HH46 ASOS-1 sounder sector only
NESDIS will notify users when routine GOES-8 scheduling is planned to be
implemented.
