Subject: Changes to the NWS Production Suite
1. Most non-data flow items advertised in last weeks memo (items 620-673) were
not implemented this week due to the declaration of critical weather associated
with the landfall of tropical storm Alberto. These items, including the
replacement of the Eta model with WRF, will be implemented this coming week at
12 UTC on June 20, 2006.
2. The transition to the next Central Computer System is expected to begin in August 2006. A moratorium on changes to the NCEP Production Suite will begin in August and conclude when the new system becomes operational in January 2007. The Snow system was shutdown on Thursday, 15 June. As of 7 June users have been given access to the temporary replacement for Frost and Snow (AQUA). There may be periods during the first few weeks when the system is unavailable due to testing and tuning of the operating system. On 15 July the installation of the replacement system (Mist) for Blue will begin. More details on the transition schedule will be provided as they become available.
3. On Monday, 5 June the NWS Telecommunications Operations Center (TOC) announced the availability of the ftp and http access to the replacement gateway system (tgdata.nws.noaa.gov). The TOC is currently in the process of transitioning customers to the tgdata server. When that transition is complete, they will declare the system fully operational. Both GRIB1 to GRIB2 data are currently available on this new server. To conserve bandwidth, GRIB2 data is being transferred to tgdata and then converted to GRIB1. For that reason, GRIB2 data will be available one to two minutes earlier on average. At the current time some GRIB1 ensemble data is taking ten to fifteen minutes to convert. NCO will continue to work to reduce that delay. Both sets of data will remain on the TOC FTP server for a minimum of 180 days after the system is declared operational. More information will be provided on this transition as it becomes.
