-------- Original Message --------
Hi Chris and John,
Thanks to Fanglin and Vijay we now have web-accessible performance
statistics from the retrospective Q1FY09 global data upgrade parallel
and HWRF runs.
All Q1FY09 sites may be accessed from the main page:
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/treadon/experiments/prd09q1o/vsdb/
The statistics available on the main page are updated daily using output
from the real-time EMC Q1FY09 real-time parallel. The EMC and NCO
real-time parallels continue to generate bitwise identical output. The
EMC parallel runs the GFS only at 00Z - unlike the four time daily GFS
runs from the NCO parallel.
A link "retrospective home
<http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/wx24fy/vsdb_glopara/prd09q1o/>" in the
upper left hand corner of the main Q1FY09 page takes you to a new page
with statistics from the retrospective parallel. The retro page
contains links to the GFS Hurricane Tracks and HWRF Hurricane Tracks.
The direct links for these pages are given below:
* retrospective home:
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/wx24fy/vsdb_glopara/prd09q1o/
* GFS hurricane:
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/wx24fy/vsdb_glopara/prd09q1o/www/track/track.html
* HWRF hurricane:
http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/wx24fy/vsdb_glopara/prd09q1o/hwrf/index.html
Thanks again to Fanglin and Vijay for doing all the work necessary to
get the retrospective and hurricane stats on the web.
Happy Holidays to all!

NCEP Model Evaluation Subscribers,
The Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) has proposed an
upgrade to the Global Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) Code.
The changes include:
1.Changes to Observations:
a) Assimilate IASI long-wave channel brightness temperatures
2. Changes to Code:
a) Improved computational efficiency
b) Use new version of CRTM_GFSGSI for radiative transfer
c) Modify height assignment for wind observations
3. Changes to Scripts:
a) Flow dependent re-weighting of background error variances
b) Increase skin temperature background error standard deviations and
snow/ice surfaces
c) variational quality control
d) add IASI
4. Changes to Fix Files:
a) Use background error file computed from large sample of forecast
pairs
b) Updated gross and variational qc parameters
c) Add IASI
d) Add GOME ozone placeholder (data neither assimilated nor monitored
with this upgrade)
5. Changes to CRTM_GFSGSI radiative transfer library:
a) Implementation of the extra-layer module to supplement atmospheres
with climatology if the inputs are lower than the CRTM model top
b) Implementation of the NESDIS MHS Snow and Sea Ice emissivity models
c) Updates to IASI Tau coefficients and MSU Spc and Tau coefficients

(where YYYYMMDDCC = year, month, day, cycle) and
ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/para/gdas.YYYYMMDD
We will make the model output available for 30 days starting Monday,
22 December so that end-users of the data can verify that no
unforeseen changes have been introduced.
Any comments on this proposed change will be appreciated. Any feedback
you wish to provide during the evaluation period should be emailed to
NCEP.List.ModelEvalFeedback@xxxxxxxx prior to 30 January, 2009.
Additional information on the GSI performance can be
found at:

statistics.
