Subject: Termination of NCEPs Regional Spectral Model for
Hawaii: Effective September 13, 2011
Effective Tuesday, September 13, 2011, with the 1200 Universal
Coordinated Time (UTC) cycle, the National Centers for
Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will stop running the Regional
Spectral Model (RSM) for Hawaii and discontinue all output
products from this model run.
A Public Information Statement was issued on May 23, 2011,
requesting comments on the proposed termination of the RSM for
Hawaii. Please see:
http://www.weather.gov/os/notification/pns11rsm_removal.htm
Based on the responses received, the decision was made to
terminate the RSM run and associated output products for Hawaii.
The RSM is a hydrostatic limited-area atmospheric model using a
spectral method for horizontal advection. It is run to 48 hours
twice daily over Hawaii with an equivalent grid spacing of 10 km
on 42 levels.
The table below lists characteristics of the RSM and other
current, and imminent, NCEP Operational Products, all of which
are based on nonhydrostatic dynamics, and all of which provide
similar or better guidance than the Hawaii RSM. More details
about the exact grids and products available for each of the
items listed in the table below are available at:

* NAM nest is planned for implementation in August or September
2011. See NWS TIN 11-16 for more details on the NAM nest.
