Subject: National Hurricane Preparedness Week May 27-June 2, 2012
NWS has designated May 27-June 2, 2012, as National Hurricane
Preparedness Week to highlight the importance of planning ahead
toprotect families and to secure homes and properties in advance
ofthe upcoming hurricane season.
Hurricanes are powerful storms that can create severe flooding,
dangerousstorm surge, high winds, and tornadoes.Although the
nationhas not experienced a major hurricane crossing the
coastlinesince 2005, the torrential rainfall from Hurricane
Irene in 2011 caused death and destruction in New Jersey, New
York, and Vermont and serves as a reminder that hurricanes of all
intensitiescan have long and lasting impacts far from the coast.
National Hurricane Preparedness Week will highlight preparedness
andhazard specific information. Each day will focus on a
specifictheme as follows:
May 27: Hurricane Basics
May 28: Storm Surge
May 29: Wind
May 30: Inland Flooding
May 31: Forecast Process
June 1: Get a Plan
June 2: Take Action
