Subject: Termination of NWS Alerts by email/SMS on
www.weather.gov Effective November 8 2012
Effective November 8 2012, NWS is discontinuing the services associated
with the mass email/SMS service provided by GovDelivery, which provides
NWS alerts by email/SMS service for all subscribed users. This service
has been provided by free subscription on
www.weather.gov <file:///Users/lindamiller/Desktop/www.weather.gov>
Current fiscal challenges require the NWS to review dissemination
methods to ensure the most efficient means are used to provide the
public with essential services.
The NWS will continue to provide alert and warning information in
standard formats, such as RSS, XML, REST, and CAP, which are available
to all users. Third party vendors also have services available which can
provide email/SMS alerts for weather events, a sample listing of such
services is available at
www.weather.gov/subscribe <http://www.weather.gov/subscribe>
Official dissemination sources including NOAA Weather Radio, NWS
Weather Wire Service, and
www.weather.gov <http://www.weather.gov>
will continue to be available to the public, and the iNWS service for
emergency managers and other core partners will also continue.
The effective date of this change is sooner than specified by NWS policy
(NWS Instruction 10-1805). The reduction of the normal advance lead time
was approved by the NWS Office of Service Director.
