Subject: Changes in Fire Weather Forecast Zone Names for
Utah Effective April 4, 2013
Effective Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 600 AM Mountain Daylight
Time, 1200 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the NWS Weather
Forecast Offices (WFO) in Salt Lake City, Utah (SLC), and
Grand Junction, Colorado (GJT), will rename four fire weather
forecast zones.
Table 1: Changed WFO SLC, UT, Fire Weather Forecast Zone Names
Zone Code Old Zone Name New Zone Name

UTZ488 Manti-La Sal National Forest Manti National

UTZ494 Canyonlands Henry Mountains
Table 2: Changed WFO GJT, CO, Fire Weather Forecast Zone
Name in UT:
Zone Code Old Zone Name New Zone Name
--------- ------------- -------------
UTZ487 Eastern Book Cliffs Book Cliffs
These are fire weather forecast zone name changes only. No
change is being made to fire weather forecast zone geographic
extents or zone numbers.
WFO SLC has fire weather forecast responsibility for
approximately the western two-thirds of Utah, while WFO SLC and
WFO GJT share fire weather forecast responsibility for the
eastern one-third of Utah. Uintah Basin, Moab and Richfield
Interagency Fire Centers (IFC) requested these name changes.
These fire weather product users felt that a different naming
convention would better serve their needs. These changes have
also been coordinated with the Eastern Great Basin Coordination
Center, Utah Interagency Fire Centers, and other fire weather
partners and users in Utah.
An updated fire weather zone map shapefile containing the new
zones is online at:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/geodata/catalog/wsom/html/firezone.htm
Partners and users of WFO SLC and WFO GJT fire weather products
will need to update their system(s) to continue receiving correct
fire weather forecasts/products.
