Subject: Comments Sought on Evaluation of WCOSS Output Data
by June 28, 2013
The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) is in
the process of transitioning the NCEP Production Suite from the
current operational high performance supercomputers to the new
Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS).
The transition to the WCOSS systems, named Tide and Gyre, is
slated to occur in July 2013.
As part of this transition, NCEP is making the output from the
WCOSS runs of the NCEP Production Suite available to the public
for evaluation. Please review the data and provide your feedback.
The GRIB, BUFR and text output is available for download at:
http://ftpt.ncep.noaa.gov/com
Imagery of the model output from a MAG-like website is online at:
http://magpara.ncep.noaa.gov
Please send your feedback or questions to:
ncep.list.wcoss.eval@xxxxxxxx
Please note the following:
- The output from the models will not be identical between the
two machines. This is due to significant machine differences and
input data differences due to timing of data arrival.
- The WCOSS systems are in an active transition mode. Output
may not be available every cycle due to ongoing testing.
- The NCEP Production Suite on WCOSS is still being
transitioned, and the models are still being fine tuned so
product delivery times are not necessarily be representative of
the final operational delivery times.
- There will be some differences in product content or format
with the output from the WCOSS. These differences will be
outlined in the TIN announcing the transition, but a preliminary
list is available at:
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/changes/docs/wcosseval.shtml
The Eebpage above also addresses some of the reasons behind the
model output differences.
