Subject: Soliciting Comments until April 15, 2014, on the
Experimental User Defined Area Forecast Point-and-Click
Web Application
Effective Monday, July 15, 2013, at Noon EDT, 1400 Coordinated
Universal Time (UTC), and continuing until July 15, 2014, the NWS
is accepting comments on the User Defined Area Forecast (UDAF)
point-and-click web application for the Conterminous United
States (CONUS) only.
www.nws.noaa.gov/survey/nws-survey.php?code=UDAF
The UDAF is an Internet-accessible application allowing direct
interaction with the full resolution (2.5km horizontal grid
spacing) NWS netCDF forecast data base to obtain forecast
information within a user specified geographic area. The
interface allows an individual to define geographical boundaries
in both area and elevation, and submit those values to retrieve a
forecast directly from the digital forecast data base. This
database is populated by NWS meteorologists at local weather
forecast offices (WFOs) responsible for that user-defined polygon
domain.
Output is presented in the same format as the point-and-click
forecast, but based on an average value of the specified area.
Additionally, the application creates a table with maximum and
minimum values, along with statistics about the size and
elevation range of the selected area. The area itself is
displayed graphically to ensure it matches the users identified
zone of interest.
